Gentoo MacOS allows you to use the portage tree and emerge natively under Mac-OSX. Many packages are still masked.
That being said, let's get down to explaining. Gentoo for MacOS X is basically just the portage package, and the portage-tree, but installed and capable of running natively under MacOS X. By installing gentoo for MacOS X you get python (or some updates to an already existing python framework - not sure), the "emerge" binary, and the portage tree (which you should sync as soon as you install it). You naturally also get the configuration files that are needed for portage to operate. And the best part is, that it is exactly there where it is under linux, and it behaves exactly like under linux.
All of this in turn allows you to use the simplicity of portage that we love, all the while using your nice MacOS X, that we also love. The only problem now is, that many, many, many packages are still masked (even though they might compile, if you tried). So, there is yet not too much to choose from, but in time, it will be the next best thing.
Meanwhile, if you want to support the community, and if you have the knowledge and resources, play around with some packages, and if you manage to compile them cleanly, submit a bug to the gentoo bugzilla.
