An influential community project started in 1984 to provide an open source alternatives to the proprietary Unix software and OSes. While aiming, initially, to provide a whole operating system, today GNU focuses on tools and libraries and used in conjunction with both commercial and free operating systems. Better known GNU projects include GCC, glibc, Gnome, emacs and many others.
