Introduction

I precise that i have used the page HOWTO HP OfficeJet 6310 : scanner and printer configuration and adapted it to my article (because its obviously the same howto except some things). This setup has been tested successfully using kernel-2.6.22-gentoo-r1 , hplip-2.7.7-r2 and the USE flags mentioned below.

If your intention is to use the CUPS print server, first install it by following link CUPS install. Next, this HP driver installation is going to automatically create a printer entry in the CUPS server.

Installation

Start by plug your printer to your router (or eventually directly to your pc via a free ethernet port) and turn it on .Make sure the Gentoo systems that you want to print from are connected to the same network. Don't forget to configure the network options on the printers if needed (default is dhcp)

The hplip driver by HP works pretty well. You might want to choose your USE flags differently (some may already be in your global /etc/make.conf), but I opted for the following (just what i need , not parport and no fax). If you want scanning to work then you should include the scanner flag.

 net-print/hplip X ppds scanner snmp

if you forget the snmp flag you will not be able to select a printers on network.

After setting your USE-flags emerge hplip, this will pull in the dependencies that are required.

 # emerge -av hplip

Now as root configure the printer using the hp-setup tool

 # hp-setup

Select "Network/Ethernet/Wireless (direct connection or JetDirect)", providing your printer has been given an IP address automatically by your router you should now have your printer listed as a device, although it will be listed as "HP Photosmart 5100 series", click on Next and select the ppd file.

WARNING , the setup tool have automatically choose a wrong driver file for me (a laserjet something) , be careful , the good ppd is at the end of the list (photosmart 5100 serie). Give the printer an appropriate Name and any other information you wish to fill in, and click through to Finish.

You should now be able to print and scan (using xsane) to this printer.

HP Tools

The configuration tool can be started as any user using the following command.

 $ hp-toolbox &

Or optionally add an entry to the menu system or desktop of your chosen X11 Window Manager.

Other

Once everything is up and running you can also change the configuration of the printer by pointing your browser at the IP address it has been assigned, as there is a built-in web-based configuration tool.

If the print abort with job stopped, check the cupsd log /var/log/cups/* and apply revdep-rebuild to rebuild broken depedencies.
