Irssi

irssi is a console based IRC program. If you are having trouble at any point during the installation, you can connect to IRC and ask for help in Gentoo's official channel, or in another support channel of your choice.

Install

To install irssi, run emerge -av irssi

Usage

You should not use IRC as root for security purposes. If you do, make sure you use the -n argument, or you will join IRC under the nickname of root.

# irssi -n bizbaz -c irc.freenode.net
[once connected]
/join #gentoo
