Maple 10

Introduction

Maple is a market-leading tool for solving mathematic problems, and it has a linux version. But the problem I encountered when I tried to install it on my Gentoo-box: The installer wouldn't start, instead I got this:

Launching installer...

grep: error while loading shared libraries: libc.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
/opt/blackdown-jdk-1.4.2.01/jre/bin/java: error while loading shared libraries: libpthread.so.0: cannot open 
shared object file: No such file or directory

After some Googling I found the solution, and could install maple. After the installing-quest everything works perfect in the program.

Installation

Maple 10 needs the Java Runtime Environment version 1.4. You first need to download j2re-1_4_2_18-linux-i586.bin from https://cds.sun.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/CDS-CDS_Developer-Site/en_US/-/USD/ViewProductDetail-Start?ProductRef=j2re-1.4.2_18-oth-JPR@CDS-CDS_Developer and move it to /usr/portage/distfiles. You can then install the JRE by issuing the following commands:

# echo "=dev-java/sun-jre-bin-1.4.2.18 **" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords 
# emerge -av =sun-jre-bin-1.4.2.18

To install Maple you have to make some changes to the .bin file. You can do this by issuing the following commands:

#  cp maple.linux.v10.installer.bin maple.linux.v10.installer.bin.bak
#  cat maple.linux.v10.installer.bin.bak | sed "s/export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL/#xport LD_ASSUME_KERNEL/" > maple.linux.v10.installer.bin
#  ./maple.linux.v10.installer.bin

And now you should see a windows-like installer on your screen, so just follow the instructions.

On amd64 machines there has been a problem starting the maple GUI due to directory names not being set right. Go to your maple installation directory $MAPLE (usually /home/[Your user name]/maple10/) and symlink the following directories:

# ln -s bin.IBM_INTEL_LINUX bin.X86_64_LINUX
# ln -s jre.IBM_INTEL_LINUX jre.X86_64_LINUX

To start maple press alt+F2 and write:

# /home/[Your user name]/maple10/bin/xmaple

Maple 11

In your Maple 11 directory, you need only execute the following:

# ln -s bin.IBM_INTEL_LINUX bin.X86_64_LINUX
# ln -s jre.IBM_INTEL_LINUX jre.X86_64_LINUX

(Note: You might need the 1.4 JRE - I'm not sure. If you encounter any errors, try re-installing after having followed the JRE instructions in the Maple 10 Installation section.)
