SaraB: Schedule and rotate automatic Backups: http://sarab.sourceforge.net/ -- A shell script, can easily be adapted to your needs. I'm using Dar with SaraB for daily backups of 10 fileservers. It's very fast using bzip2 compression (gz is slower, who knows why??)
DAR home: http://dar.linux.free.fr/#help (Opensource, also available compiled for windows) DAR can be compared to TAR, having many advantages:
- supports differential backups - compresses files one by one (safer when media gets old) - ...

DAR FAQ: http://www.99techs.net/linux/dar.html
See also kdar[1], a KDE program using same libs as dar (libdar). It's great to restore single files/directories from a big backup. For automated backups (cron), the command-line DAR is more adequate.
