Running emerge with the default options is kind of inefficient because it goes 100% of the network usage or 100% of CPU usage, never both, wasting both CPU and network when is using the other one.
However, as of Portage 2.1 or newer you can enable this by adding 'parallel-fetch' to your FEATURES-var in /etc/make.conf! The rest of this article is now pretty much obsolete; just add this to your /etc/make.conf:
